It seems very hard to believe the numbers in the date, the last letters in Liberty and E. Pluribus Unum from damage! What say you?

A die face (or in this cases faces) couldn't experience anything that would result in distortion such as this. Hard to imagine a striking error or any other error that could do this either. Leaving as noted, various forms of PSD (PMD) - trying to discern what exactly happened in the coins travels would be impossible, but damage, corrosion and wear should sum it up...
