It is not a variety or error. It has been purposely sanded/ground down so it is considered PSD.

It may have been sanded/ground down... IMHO it appears to be normal wear... Then again Bob is the pro not me... LOL!!!

I would not exclude the possibility of it being hit with a hammer.

Normal wear? Hit with a hammer? Come on guys, you should know better than that. Normal wear would not remove he rims from the coin. Hitting with a hammer would smash what little of the devices we can still see, as well as distort the shape. Some times, the easiest answer is also the most logical.

Here is a similar situation. However, it was not accomplished in the same way. This is a mint error.

Yet seriously, I have come across modern coins that resemble this one but are greased dies that somehow get this flat look. Wonder if I still have one to show what I mean. I'll look and if I do have it I'll post it here. And thank you mbb.

In regard to the OPs question, the effect on the coin shown often occurs when the coin gets stuck in a counting machine. If the coin is wedged against the side, it's rubbed against a rotating steel shelf, essentially sanding the coin down.

Since the waters have already been muddied, a similar effect is displayed on genuine mint errors including examples struck through grease, weak and trial strikes, thin and split planchets. In low grades, normal circulation never completely flattens the devices, but rather slowly erodes the surface, including the fields.

I am echoing Bob's statement: PSD, the coin was sanded down...

Think its because at the time I was looking at the post and pics I was really craving a coldcut ham and cheese sandwich. LOL! Seriously!
