    1992-D penny with a dot

I found a 1992-D penny that has a dot between the A and M. Looking at the initials it looks like a close AM.

Nice find, and it certainly does look like a close AM.The dot is probably just a small chip and nothing really to be concerned about.Congrats on your find !

Yes, the initials appear to be of the wide am variety, but I cannot be sure about the spacing between the A and M. It doesn't look quite right to me. Maybe a better picture will help.

Now that I look at a blown up picture a little better, this coin looks like a normal Wide AM cent. The left side of the G in FG is about half over the building, and the right side of the G is half over nothing. I think the low quality of the picture gives the illusion of the close AM initials.

          Agreed.

It's a normal wide AM cent with some die deterioration that creates the illusion of "less space" between the A and the M. The dot is either a small bubble (so small, that you couldn't pop it even if you tried), or a die gouge or dent.

I'm guessing you mean "less space" ?

One thing has me still not convinced this isn't a close AM....the initial F should be almost touching the memorial on a normal WAM. Sure would like to see a more focused picture of AMERICA.

The best I can do (attached). Adding to the "Close AM" illusion is the shadow of the M, which invades some of the space between it and the A. (More focus would be nice, though.)

Thanks George, I've tried enlarging and focusing too, with no real luck. The distance of the F from the memorial concerns me as well as the uneven spacing of the M between the A and E if you know what I mean. As I said before, the F should be almost touching the building...and the M should be centered between the A & E.
