    Blank Planchet??

I stopped at the Credit Union after work and after depositing my check (Pay day!!), I inquired about any rolls they might have. It's been two months since I have been able to get any from there so wasn't expecting much. To my suprise they had $20 worth! Went home and unwrapped $5.00 worth and this popped out. Not sure what to think. Both sides are more or less blank, and the rim is still there for the most part. Got my scale out & it weighs 2.55. What think you my friends??? Thanks! Bill

      1. Is it copper or zinc 2. Is there any sense of it being a foreign planchet. Any idea of year or decade. It seems to be zinc from where I stand as I see what appears to be zinc. If that is so then chemical action has eroded the surface area, therefore it is less than the 3.11 grams for zinc coins. Other than that I will have to hear what the experts say.

Lucien, I did the "bounce test" and it sure sounds exactly like a copper when I do alongside a copper cent. Diameter matches up perfectly with another cent, so adds up there. Only thing that doesn't look "Kosher" is it seems to be just a tiny bit thinner than a normal cent. Still not sure what to think. The rims are still probably 50% intact also.

Roger...you got your types backward again The type 1 is with no rim, and the type 2 has the rim formed on it.

Bill, this very well may be a blank. Is that corrosion or stains on the faces of the coin?

Bob, both sides are very smooth to the touch with no pitting at all. Pretty sure they are stains.

Sure looks like a blank planchet to me Bill. If it's 2.5 grams, it should be a copper plated zinc example. That would be the second blank found by our members this week. Nice find!

If it is a copper cent then it s/be 3.11g . Can't figure this one out without something to ID it. Just a question. What is that greyish looking color on the surface of the coin Bill?

What are you sorry for Lucien? With this many members, there are always instances where answers overlap. It seems to me that you know a lot more than you give yourself credit for. We are all learning every day.

Still kinda confused on the weight if it is copper. Since it weighs 2.5, wouldn't that indicate it's zinc? All I see is copper on the entire coin with no zinc "showing through". Would someone like to do an in hand examination for me? Thanks for all the input folks! Bill

Appears to be staining of some type Lucien. It is very smooth with no pitting or corrosion on either side. Bill
