    What's the difference between a plain 1990 and a 1990 no S? Thanks

The 1990 no S cent is a proof coin and looks completely different than the 1990 business strikes which were minted in Philadelphia. In addition, all 1990 no S cents were originally found in their original proof set packaging from the mint to my understanding. The 1990 proof no S cents are extremely rare and worth a pretty penny!

Thank you very much Chugly. I was reading about it in the Cherrypickers and the one I have isn't a frosty cameo, but it is nice.

Bev, you will know it if you find a proof cent, they are very different with highly polished fields that look mirror like. The chances of finding one in circulation are pretty low just for the proof.

          1990 cent - 8.651 Billion minted.
          1990 no-S proof - fewer than 100 known.

          There's your difference.

You have a much better chance of being hit by a meteor and living to tell about it - TWICE - than you do of finding the valuable 1990 no-S cent in change. It just is not going to happen.

The 1990 no-S cent is proof, meaning it was only issued in special collector sets. It was never issued for pocket change. Of the 2 million some-odd 1990-S cents made, only a handful have ever been found without the intended mintmark.

On the other hand, 1990 Philadelphia minted cents aren't supposed to have a mintmark, there were billions and billions of them made, and they are very common in pocket change even today.

Here is a link to a pic of a 1990-No S Mint Mark. Hope this will help your question some.

Lol, one of your favorite subjects, huh Chuck? I've seen your quotes to the same effect on finding that coin pop up on google.

There's actually a No-S coming up for auction on Teletrade... interested to see the realized price.

I want to thank all of you for your answers. I actually saw the write up from C.D. Daughtrey on All Experts. Unfortunately after I asked the question. You explained it in depth.
