    1954 Prickly Pear 2n1 question

    Hi,

This coin exhibits a glue-like substance on the obverse. The area that is not covered in this substance appears circulated and some of it BU. It seems that what shows as BU 'did' have this substance on it. The reverse is circulated (normal).

Prickly Pear? The coin shows around the whole rim area (obverse and reverse) what looks like deterioration prickling.

I tested the substance to see if I can pick at it a little bit with my fingernail to lift the stuff off. The area I was slightly successful and it shows a flaw in the coin underneath.

I am now intrigue and want to remove the glue-like substance without damaging the coin.

How do I do it and what is that prickly stuff along the outer devices?

    Thanks!

    Lara

PS Picture #2 is of the back of his neck (fyi)

Acetone or xylene are the most recommended, but in a pinch on a coin that's not of great value, try some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip to clean it. I'd say you called the deterioration on the die!

The marks are from sever die disentigration. Not pretty. Easier to give up on this coin. LOL

        Day 2 and gunk removed

Hmmm? I wonder what that substance was. It preserved the coin fairly well. Unfortunately, it also left some unnatural toning. Anyway, here is the 'after' make-over pictures.

Super Glue often does that Lara.

Wow Chris, you mean Super Glue will keep a coin looking that nice after so long? Pretty cool.

Thank you everyone for your input. Into the toss pile it goes.
