    '70 S small date...

...or is there an in-between? This one is giving me fits.

Roller this one is a Large Date, check the 9 first and compare that with the example that JC has on the thread for small date.

Here is JC's Explanation :1970S SD: the 7 is almost the same height as the 9 & 0, the inner loop of the 9 points at the middle of the 7 (LD points at the base of the 7); LIBERTY lacks detail and is mushy in appearance. (Proofs have the same diagnostics)

      Hope this helps

No in between, and this one is a large. One time I heard a member talking about a medium date, but never could figure out what they were talking about.

Definitely a large date pictured. And there is no "in between". Once you have a small date in hand, it really stands out clearly.here is one of coops comparison pics

I agree with all said but the large dates I have pint to the mint mark, not the base of the 7. And the 7 is too low to be a small date. Anyway, I agree that it's not a small date as shown on CC.

I never use the old pictures where they line up the 7s, 9s, or 0s. That was before they figured out that the 9s and 7s are different on the LD and SD cents of the 1970S vintage.

                Large Date:
Look for the blunt inner curve of the 9 and notice how the curve aims toward a lower area of the tail of the 9.

On the 7, as long as the coin is not horribly worn, there is a line that separates the top bar of the 7 from the leg of the 7.

                Small Date:

The inner portion of the 9 is more pointed and aims to a higher part of the tail of the 9

That line where the top of the & meets the leg of the 7 does not appear on the 7 on the SD cent.

                  Dont forget 'Liberty'.....

All of the above mentioned attribute the small or large date cent accordingly. But don't forget how 'weak' LIBERTY gets as the letters go from the 'L' on the left, to the extremely weak 'T' and 'Y' on the right!

I use this as a secondary determining factor. I've seen many Large Dates with a weakly struck LIBERTY, I've seen many struck by worn dies, I've seen many struck through grease as well that can mimic the Small date LIBERTY. I've also seen many with weak LIBERTY due to die abrasion. BUT..It can certainly help to confirm a diagnosis.

I just figure if it's the date that is different, I better learn to recognize the attributes of the date.
