    Different Size 1970 S dates

I posted 3 different size 1970 S dates that I have ran across over the past few weeks or so.
I will admit that after finding a small date I can easily identify one, however sometimes I run across one that make me wonder...

One of the dates I have labeled "medium", only for lack of knowing why this supposedly large date looks thin/small in size and also has a fading liberty.

So my question for the pros is, why do some dates differ in size? Is it because of the die wear that make one thicker? If so does that mean that the date starts off thinner and gets thicker over time?

    Thank you!

    "medium" / "smaller" large date

You have a 2 large dates and one small date. There is no medium date.

Your 'medium date' is a large date coin with a slightly weak hubbing and probably some die polishing that removed some of the relief of the digits. Coop is correct that there were only two master dies used in 1970 - a small date and a large date.

Coop (two large, one small) & Coppercoins (die polish) are both correct. I had heard of these '3rd varieties' but never saw a photo, nor a coin. Coiner in '70 has his hands full, lots of problems: ...if it could go wrong it did..... Good job SuddenAdoration on the find and the photos.
