    1955 Poor man's dd question

    Hello all!

I found a 1955 poor man's doubled die when I was cataloging my mother's coins for her. I listed the approximate value as "novelty coin" since it isn't a true double. I was just wondering, does it have any value beyond what I stated for her?

    Thanks for your help!

No, it is just die deterioration, pretty common and was only given a name by people trying to cash in on the 55 DDO. I've seen dozens in my searches. Not saying some inexperienced person wouldn't pay a couple of bucks, but that goes for anything.

To a collector, Maineman750 is correct - there is no value. However, if you word it properly and it is a nice coin, you might be lucky and get a couple bucks on eBay. There are all kinds of bidders there.

I have to say I disagree with this idea. Nothing personal, but we don't want to get involved with misrepresenting coins to others for a quick profit. That isn't what this forum is about. Let's protect the integrity of this site. okay?

I did not say I was a proponent of doing it and did not mean to imply misrepresenting anything. I apologize if that is how you read my post. However, I have seen more than one represented accurately as a "poor man's double die" and sold for several dollars. I have also seen several not sell at all, but I did not pay much attention to the price/shipping.

I have seen roll after roll of these. They were at one time sold for between $5 and $10 as 'novelties' but that gimmick is losing its flavor. Most people won't touch them at a premium any more, because FINALLY they have become educated enough to know they are very common coins.

What's worse is they are from not one die, but many different ones. They really should have no value beyond that of a normal LDS '55 in any particular condition.

I paid $5.00 once for one...BUT NOT because it was " a poor mans".... but had a die crack in it and I was trying to put together a die crack year set...never finished that set.... it's like the colored and hologram silver eagles...told someone it was worth silver value only..... then I fell in love with a hologram one..... paid $5.00 over spot.....just wanted it....
no collector value to your moms coin other than for a 1955 but you never know what someone will be looking for....
