    Difference between MS66 and MS67

    Hi all,

I'm having trouble determining the difference between the two. I checked out the PCGS Photograde and the 66 and 67 they give look nearly identical. How can you tell the difference? I have a super sweet 1944-D that I believe might have a shot at hitting that evasive 67...but I don't want to take that chance unless it's at least 50/50. Thoughts? (I can post pictures...but for MS65+ grades you can't really give an accurate grade through pictures)

    Thanks!

I'm still new and learning when it comes to a lot so please take this accordingly....

Chris and others have stated alot about this in the past. Its hard for different reasons for different years, which from what I understand takes years of experience to get it down and diferent graders all grade diferently, depends on lots. I have a 1988 in an NGC slab graded ms66 and it looks like a WOW grade all except for some minor stuff on the back, which is prolly why it got bumped down. I'd suggest looking at some graded examples in person and seeing what they look like. Also population reports for the graders give you a good picture of how they are grading, if there is a big diference in price they prolly won't give it the higher grade unless it really is a "thats definatley the highest grade wow factor"

Such subtleties are best examined in person; maybe at a show or a dealer compare coins in slabs with 65-68 grades and make mental notes. If you have a dealer you trust, ask their opinion on the grade(s) of your coin(s) and discuss it. I am not sure it is possible to figure it out from photos, no matter how good they are.

like i always say grading so close as ms-66 ,ms-67 is only one guys opinion from the next guy. take the test; have it professionly graded by 3 or 4 differant grading companies ,anacs, pcgs ,ngc ,etc. and watch them come back with at least three differant grades.

Ultimately, grading is subjective. You can have a nice MS66 that you crack and submit 20 times in a row getting the same grade and on the 21st try it could grade 67, or on the third try. Or never. High MS grading is a matter of opinion and perspective, but also a little luck is involved in getting the grade. Knowing when to give up on a coin is important too.

I agree with Jason, the differences between some of the upper high grades are so minute that photos may not teach you anything at all.

Each grading company looks at a coin differently, so you're often likely to get different grades from each one.

              It depends

If the grader had a fight with the wife last night...you get a MS65

              If the grader has a hangover...you get a MS66

If the grader won the lottery last night...you get a MS67
