Brass Penny?

My son handed me a penny that he found in change. He said it felt lighter than most pennies and is not made of copper. It is very yellow in color. I agree with him that it is lighter in weight than the standard penny. I read that there can be a chemical reaction when copper coins are placed in certain chemicals. Is this common? I attached a couple pics of the coin but the yellowness isn't as obvious in the pictures. 2007 D. Error or a high school chemistry student bored in class?IMG_2103.jpg

He's right, its made of zinc and coated in copper.

One of the experts will help you determine if it is an erroer.

One reason why it may be more yellow may have to do with the plating process. Can,t recall if it is too much copper in the solution or too much Zinc that produces the Brass plating. Same thing has happened to other years of pennies.

I got it! The more Zinc You mix with copper, the lighter the color. Hence a Bright shiny Brass plated penny! The mint saves a few bucks by using more zinc, it,s a cheaper metal.
Maybe the mint will try compressed cardboard, brass plated, lacquer coated pennies in the future!
