Cleaning Circulated Coins

Keeping true to my belief that there is no such thing as a stupid question....

Should I clean my coins? I have a 2011 circulated coin that I believe to have an error (I'm not experienced enough to classify, it most likely isn't even an error). Should I clean it or leave as is?

In general what is the S.O.P for cleaning circulated coins?

Cleaning coins is a big no-no in collecting. However, there is a difference between cleaning and CONSERVING coins.
Firstly, you should never use an abrasive to clean your coins, as they will leave scratches. I knew a few people that scrubbed their coin with a toothbrush. It wasn't pretty.

If there is gunk or residue on your coin, there are various chemicals that can help remove it without damaging the coin, such as acetone, goo-gone, and other conservation liquids. Check out the coin cleaning and conservation sub-forum here:http://www.lincolncentforum.com/foru...p-Conservation

Depends on the condition of the coin and what needs to come off. Use the search tab above and look at threads in the forum about "coin cleaning" and see what comes up. Post a picture of the coin if you can because it's impossible to really comment without seeing it.

It also depends on the error or variety. Sometimes you are much better off leaving it alone or sending to a professional.
