    Blank Copper Planchet

I found this blank planchet in a penny roll, both sides, what appears to be a copper planchet, but it's dime size and weight (2.5 g), same as a Mercury or Roosevelt dime. Any ideas?

It appears to be a standard type 2 blank planchet. Copper plated zincs do weigh 2.5g. so the weight is correct. I believe the diameter needs to be 19mm.

Yep, it's 19mm Bob, but what the heck is it and how did it happen? I'm way behind the knowledge curve on blank planchets for different coin types with different metal composition.

A type 2 planchet is a blank disk that has gone through the upset mill (the part that adds the rims). For whatever reason, the planchet never made it to the dies, and left the mint through whatever means.
As Bob said, zinc planchets have a weight of 2.5g, so that is what is is. Cool find!

Thanks Bob and Simon! It's making sense now. So it's a post-1982 penny planchet that never made it to the dies.

Correct. Do you know if the roll was an OBW roll or was it just a normal roll with mixed dates?

Great find! What was throwing me off was when you said it was the size of a dime. 19.05mm is the normal size of a cent.

I meant to say it was thin as a dime in it's planchet state. Given it's a zinc plated planchet meant to becoming a penny, I think the coin will become normal-penny thickness once it goes thru the die presses. Does that make sense?
