Looks to be a case of incuse die wear and plating issues. Definitely common for the date. Not a doubled die, unfortunately.
Keep up the hunt!
And for future reference, they are cents. -
Hi.. 2 things....I can't see the date in the pic close up...but it doesn't look double per say...may be the copper plating is pushed by the strike leaving a raised outline of the date...without a close, clear pic this is the best I can say...some people use a magnifier with the lens of their camera to get a closer pic,or a microscope set up....I like the latterMember: Florida State representative for the ANA, Florida state representative for CONECA, F.U.N. and the Ocala Coin ClubComment

1989 in particular was a year that saw many dies showing this combo of incuse offset die wear and plating disturbance doubling (also offset, but raised or puffy. Not a doubled die as noted. These things sell on ebay often as doubled dies when they are not.
I have a tutorial on die wear here: http://lincolncentresource.net/forum...ead.php?t=6169

More great tutorials with pictures. I have about 20 late 80s cents with plating issues that I have already found (in my two months at this) and saved in a baggie. Now I know what to put on the label. I have a red box labeled "reference coins" and these are going in there now. Thanks guys. With initials like "SDP" I was destined to end up collecting coinsComment
