    1943 steel cent Double date?

    Hey all!

    I have a 1943 steel penny.
Its date seems slightly doubled, with a 'clump' on the "1".
What kind of doubling is it?
Is it common for it to do that?

    Thanks

Die chip on the 1. Die deterioration on the whole date.

        I'm seeing machine doubling.

I'm seeing a mix of both MD and DDD. The important thing is to realize that it does not have the characteristics of true hub doubling.
          Keep up the hunt!

I see no machine doubling at all. This is die deterioration doubling.

It could be the angle, but I think there might be a little bit on the tail of the 9. The glare is making it a little difficult for me.

This is very common on steel cents. I could show hundreds of them like this. Also steel cents are very known for MD.

Yeah, not sure about the 9, but the tail of the 3 may be showing some MD. I am also guilty of, "It doesn't matter..." but I do feel it is important for learners to be able to tell the difference among the even the "valueless" forms of doubling.
