Sorting through Wheat Cents

I have received a shipment of many, many wheat cents. Working diligently I have sorted to decade. These coins are dirty... Grimy. I know we should Never ever ever -- clean a coin. BUT, soak them is something just to get the surface dirt off??? Any suggestions??

One other -- found one 1880 Indian Head.... Dirty as all get-go but surprisingly legible...

Nope, do not just pour a bunch of water on them. Ever see the result of coins from a water fountain? If you find something nice with them, try acetone or verdicare.

That's it.... Will that dissolve common dirt?? Things that are water soluble??

If it's water soluble, acetone should work too.

Just to clarify- DON'T pour acetone all over them.... don't do anything. Search them, when you find something worthwhile clean that single coin off with a q-tip and acetone. Leave everything else you don't want to keep individually alone!

You guys are great. So only use acetone on the one(s) that absolutely need it and not ones that will not be used.... Sounds reasonable...

I use mineral oil & Qtip or really soft tooth brush...I know some are real nasty after looking through a scope! I soak them in it to loosen the crud & then lightly Qtip or brush depending on how nasty...Just my humble opinion, not an expert but sure does the job for me!
