I am getting better at identifying errors and varieties thanks to the collector community and folks like you in the forums. Would someone please tell me how to spot a re-plated coin?

They are either very glossy, sometimes to the point where the mint luster (radial flow lines) are missing. Other times they are very matte, and have uniform lines or streaks across the surface. Steelies were originally plated before they were made into blanks, so the plating should not be on the sides of the coin.
In some cases the coin was AU, so high points might be worn under the new plating. In other cases a corrosive was used and there is a pitted appearance around the edges of the design. And also if the coin had corrosion, there could be pitting or bubbling from old rust under the new plating.
