I think this coin is a 1938S RPM-002 but I see some slight differences in the mint mark. To me it looks like there is something coming out of the top of the S and also the extra bottom serif looks to stick out further than the pictures on coppercoins.com. Am I looking too hard or are there differences compared to the RPM-002?

It looks like 002, an example that might have been harshly cleaned or scratched. The anomaly above the MM might be a contact mark on the coin.

This is definitely 1938S-1MM-002. As mentioned above, the coin is very harshly cleaned, which will change its appearance from an uncleaned example.Charles D. Daughtrey, NLG, Author, "Looking Through Lincoln Cents"
