I have two 1954-S pennies with the "S" in different locations. It appears the "normal" location is centered between the 9 and the 5 but as you see in the picture I have one with the S under the 5. Does anyone have any info on this?

Mintmarks during this era were punched into the die by hand, and the location varied quite a lot. You're spot-on about the "normal" location, but in reality there are many MM placements in existence among the various dies used to strike 1954-S Cents. No premium is commanded by "abnormal" placement, although some are certainly more interesting than others!Builder of Custom Coin Photography Setups. Sure. Before 1990, mint marks were punched into each individual working die by hand, so it is perfectly normal for the mint mark position to vary coin to coin. Pretty much anything under the date area is considered "normal." On some dates, you will occassionally see the mint mark even touching parts of the date. All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. As mentioned above...location can vary greatly. Check out this link for an examples of how they varied on the 1954-S RPMs alone.
