    The 1959 appears to be damage. Whether it was once encased(or attempted to be encased) or put in a vise we may never know. The L appears to me to show signs of mushrooming and damage(much like the top of the letters of IN.

      An area on a coin can be depressed while still leaving the raised detail relatively intact, the 1959 is an excellent example of this- it is indeed post strike damage.

            Yes Will, I would think so because it is damaging a coin for no good reason except to give us something to have to figure out

              When they are placed in a vise with other coins the design transfers. On a couple of coins put between a 2X2 and smacked with a hammer, you see the damage on just one area of the coin. I'm thinking this is probably how it happened.
