    1982D Oddity

I found this in a Wells Fargo plastic-shrink-wrap roll.

I noticed it right away because it made a funny (light) sound against the other pennies. I weighed it and it was 2.1 grams.

The obverse is somewhat concave (sloped inward).

The reverse is somewhat convex and rounded like a button. It has no detail at all. It looks as though it were run over a sanding machine or maybe it was rounded off by a file (garage job).

First, I don't think this could happen at the mint, could it?

Next, if someone did it in their garage, what would be the purpose of the end result? Were they just bored and looking for "something" to do?

    Thanks for any comments...

Kids used to do things like this by rubbing the coin on concrete to make it the shape of a dime. You know, for vending machines.

Also could be sanding down to make a two headed coin... Lots of things after minting -- nothing during

Poor little coin. Someone had a hangover when they punched that mint mark into the die too. Just tragic.
