I agree, some sort of plating issue. The copper plating on the zinc core is thin. It could be that contaminants on the core gassed during the heat and pressure from the striking process as well as split along the demarcated edge of the die. Such ruptures are subject to the chemically reactive nature of the exposed zinc core which will rapidly oxidize causing more bubbling and splitting. This is especially true around the mintmark and the 5 digit which often goes through the greatest expansion when struck and the splits gain the most separation.
