    1987D RPM?

    This mint mark on my 1987D penny looked like it may have been punched twice or punched crooked or something. Thoughts?

    I think you are seeing a plating issue. They can be tricky!

      I agree on the plating issue... Also it appears the die was in a very late die state... The mint will quite often use dies until they are ready to fall apart... In mid 1982 the mint switched from a solid planchet to a copper plated zinc planchet... The plating can get really distorted and split!!!

        The top of the mint mark is definitely thicker than normal, but I also see here it has taken a hit. I'll need a better close-up to determine anything further.
