    1992 Reverse cracks?

    Hi,

Didn't know what variety to look for so I took the simplest one 1992 and searched for Close AM. Of course no hits on that one but I found three coins with something that I first thought was die crack in the same region of the coin (I in UNITED). After taking some photos I realized that this could not be a die crack since it appears like a ridge on the coin. Fourth coin is a control.

    1. What could it be and why does it appear in the same region of the coin?

    2. Is this common for the 1992 memorial reverse or does it appear on other years as well?

Sorry for my images but I had to shoot through a crappy lupe.

    Mici

Yes, the corners of the memorial building are very common places for die cracks to develop toward the rim. I have a few cents with die cracks at all four corners of the memorial building.

I collect die cracks by year.
took me a while to find a 1992
        Nice coin
I have them one a year from 1954 to 2016
I have some from 1909 to 1954 also but not every year yet.
But it can and probably does happen each and every year. some years do not have as many coins made
so by default not as many dies made and those dies may not be used as much

But as a die is used after enough use, may crack at a weak spot. these dies are normally removed from
use after a mint employee notices the crack

On a die crack coin, the die get a crack running in it
when the coin is struck the metal flows into the crack so that on the coin it does indeed look like a raised ridge.
just like the coins design, letters, and dates are raised on the coin, and sunk into the die, a crack is raised on a coin and sunk into the die.

As stated the corners of the building have been a week point in terms of die cracks
this is why you look to have 3 different dies with cracks in similar locations
Any of the corners is the area I would look at first for die cracks.
1983 is a good year to look at for reverse die cracks at each corner up to all 4 corners.

Thanks for such nice explanation! I was watching some YouTube videos of variety hunting some time ago and drawn from my memory those were looking slightly different which made me conclude that what I saw not a die crack. Didn't know that the die crack was collectible but I imagine that it would be fun to find a roll of new coins which all hold the same crack pattern. Would you mind to show any of your more spectacular cracks that you collect?

It's not as much the crack that's collectible, but the type and severity.

Die cracks are collected by very few people as a whole.
Like stated, cracks happen a lot, to much actually
              They have little exceptional value.
but ALL people should collect what they like and want to collect.
Just understand cracks do not add value to coins like other errors (off center, double strike, off metal, Etc.)
Extreme or strange cracks can add some value, and if someone was looking for a 1992 crack they may pay extra just to get one
I have found 4 coins that are the same die and shows the crack getting a little longer in 2 of the coins
If I get a chance I will try to take pics of some of my coins.

things to look for on cents: doubled dies, RePunched Minmarks, extream errors
try looking at COPPERCOINS.COM for a list of RPMs and DDOs/DDRs
