    83 memorial something missing?

I have been trying to get this thread going/started or what ever for over an hour, know i have done wrong so forgive my caveman mentality. eventually will get the hang of things. pulled this out of a roll from the bank. Have mounds of mmmmm got to study more before I can say ya or nay, those double dies verses the machine thingys have me cross eyed ... anyway this one was easy to spot. Looking at the center of the pillars the statue is gone. Took the photos with my camera and the multiplier lens set up. With the camera on full magnification and playing with the lighting, playing with the angels a person can almost make out a slight shadow where the legs might be. The steps seem to be full, there also seems to be a few other things but till I get some better magnification and a few miles behind me I am unsure. Have not yet been into collecting for a month yet and this is the first time I have tried to send a photo. Tried to attach them to the end of this but every time I did I would push the wrong button. so sorry for that. Sorry once again for so many questions. So basically what have I got here please. Thank you.

Looks to me like you have an overzealous mint worker, and one heavily abraded reverse die.

Sometimes they go a bit overboard with the grinder, and wind up removing design elements. You can see the criss-crossing scratch marks all over the reverse. In your case, it appears there was one or more clashed die events that they were trying to remove.

Other times, it can be caused by grease and other detritus clogging up parts of - or sometimes all of - a die. In fact, I have one similar to this I found last night that I'll be taking pictures of later that has just that going on.

    More on Abraded Dies

    More on Die Clashing

More on Struck Through Filled Dies (Greasers)

Holy moly, there's even a lot of damage to the columns from the die abraison! Pop, 1983's are full of things to see so no wonder this one caught your attention! Like Frank said, die clashes, abraided die clashes, die cracks, and there are some nice doubled dies this year too. Here's a link to look at the DD's. You are doing a fine job, don't worry, be happy

Link to one of the websites listing doubled dies (my favorite for searching different year DD's)

Nice... Heavily abraded die... It looks like some of the Y from LIBERTY is still in Bay 2 (B2)... Looks like shadows of Abes neck and chin in B8 and B9 (Count from left to right)... Your pics are a little out of focus but are good other wise... When you upload pics click on the Go Advanced button on the lower right of the text box when already in a thread then on the Manage Attachments button... When you create a new thread just scroll down a little to the Manage Attachments button... Make sure you stay within the size guide lines when uploading or the web site ignores you Hope that helps a little!!!

Thank you so much, I truly am thankful for such a wonderful group of people. Yes I can imagine the photos are not the best, not really an excuse but those are the very first photos I have very taken with that Galaxy; promise I will practice LOL. I will ask , never mind I won't. Going to require a bit of study on some of the things you said. But please bear with me and all my mistakes. Will jot them all down and see what comes about.Had to go back and forth from where the photos were placed just to get them all aboard. I am far below the scale when it comes to modern tech. For that being said, I truly appreciate all the most welcome help and support. Told the wife today I think I will get a microscope, sure it will help me and my VERY old eyes. What you all think of that camera that comes with the AM scope? (SE 306R-PZ-2 ) ... my daughter just walked in with a 1960 no mint uarter she got out of the vending machine at work, mmmmm am happy for her. Ok thank you again

You will get it eventually... It can take time and no two people are the same... Some learn faster others take longer... Until I got a good set up it would take around 200 pics to get one good one or just good enough actually You do the best you can and ask all the questions you need to... My microscope these days is a camera on a microscope stand... My pics are stacked images... That's the only way I can get any decent pics

My camera is a Canon Rebel EOS... It takes good pics but the operator is a little off I have vision issues also... Just got me some new coke bottles Image stacking is done with software... I will take 2 to 5 pics focused at different levels... The software then puts the pics together so that I get a much higher resolution... That gives more detail to the pic and improves the over all focus... The amscope web site http://www.amscope.com/ should have the info for your camera... I bought my set up from one of the members her named ray_parkhurst... It is a good set up for me!!!

Image stacking, at least for micro and macro photography, is a processing technique which combines multiple digital shots usually taken at different focus distances that are combined manually or automatically in an image processing program to achieve greater clarity of the object photographed. I never do it, but I have tried it.
