Clad coins are made with layers of different metal. Your quarter there is one. So are dimes, half dollars and dollar pieces. Here is a pic of one from the edge where you can see the different layers.

There are also silver clad coins that generally come in mint sets with 40% silver as opposed to the 1964 and older coins I listed above that were 90% silver.Last edited by makecents; 01-28-2019, 05:21 PM. -

Lincoln cents are one of 2 types - from 1909 thru mid 1982, except for 1943, they were a solid coin of copper/zinc and or tin - mid 1982 to present they are all copper plated zinc cores... In 1943 they were zinc plated steel cores... Dimes, quarters and half dollars have been clad since 1965... I am not sure about dollar coins... Here is some info from our Glossary -
Clad: (defined here to differentiate from plated coins) A clad coin is one which has differing layers of metal which are mechanically bonded to one another. This is in contrast to platedcoins, which use electrolysis to bond a coating of one metal onto another. Most U.S. Coinage is clad, but Lincoln cents made from mid 1983 to the present are plated. There are no clad U.S. Cents.
Hope that helps a bit!!!Jim
