Hi everyone! I just signed up today. I was digging through some spare change and found what appeared to me at least to be a very shiny 1959 penny. knowing very little, I was wondering what I should be looking for in determining what value the coin might have?
1959-D found.

Welcome to the LCF! The short version of what makes a Lincoln cent worth more than just a penny is, if it is high grade or is a variety or error. Also, sometimes if the mintage for that particular year was low. The guys here are better at explaining this than I am so let's get them to chime in.
Meanwhile, for starters, here is a link to the Lincoln Cent Grading Guide that really helps to see pics and explanations of how cents are graded. http://www.lincolncentforum.com/linc...grading-guide/Comment

Even though you'd need to look through a lot of cents from circulation to find a 59-D with that much red, it's still not worth extra because at that time a lot of people saved unopened unc rolls of cents so you can still buy a fresh roll of 59s for a few dollars and the coins will look like they were just made today.Comment

Welcome to the forum.
Congratulations on your find in pocket change but it is worth face value to a collector for all the reasons stated above.
Hope it sparks an interest to keep looking and collecting.Comment

Wow! Thanks everyone for the quick and informative responses. I just thought it was cool to find such an old penny with a shine to it. Then I started googling and saw there is so much information out there about rare currency. I may or may not have started looking through all of my spare change. Lol. Glad to be here and glad to have this resource.Comment
