    1990 LMC Crazy Columns

    Hi Everyone!

Going through my weekly box of pennies from the bank and stumbled across this 1990 cent. The penny has been well circulated and I wish it was in better condition. Not sure how to categorize this one. Seems like columns are all over the memorial building. Let me know what you think.

    Look forward to your responses.

Not sure what you have here Bill. In some of your photos what I see in the center of bays 1, 2 and 3 does look like it could be extra columns, but in other photos that part and what is in the last few bays looks like heavy die scratches. Of course the lines to the right of columns 1 and 5 and to the left of columns 8 and 12 are part of the design (intentionally engraved shadows of other columns). I'm thinking it is all related to heavy die scratches and the lighting is causing things to look differently. Can you get close ups of the areas in question?

I agree with Vivien. Everything that is not part of the normal design is from die abrasion.

I agree with Viv that these are die scratches. I think all of them are.

Thank you all for your responses. After thinking it over while at work today I totally agree with you Viv. While there are some secondary columns I find it difficult to distinguish what are actual errors & what are die scratches or deterioration. I did take a couple more photos which convinced me even more. This penny will be returning to circulation but I'll be keeping my eye out for the 1990 in the future.

          Thanks again!

Thank you for the follow up pics Bill! Your find reminded me of a bizarre one that I sent off to Jim for photos and Mike Diamond stopped by and gave us his determination on it. Here is the thread (please look at Jim's photos at Post #10 - not mine )

Since you're from Dundee my theory is a Crocodile got ahold of it and Mick grabbed croc off coin. So crocodile scraped coin with it's teeth as Mick saved the coin. So Im pretty sure that is what happened to coin.
Life is not about greatness but on the impact of good onto others. It is a matter of how much one shines. Explains why I like shiny coins.
