The weight of a 1966 penny.

Hello, I have a question regarding the weight of a 1966 penny I have, it weighs 3.27grams, I weighed it and weighed it again and it keeps coming up to that weight, what could it be? Thank You if you can.

Could be alot of thing. Its should weigh 3.11 but I'm not sure if 3.27 is within tolerance. First, take some pics. Compare the thickness to others and take pics. What made you want to weigh a 1966 anyway?

Yes, that is within normal, even if one looks thicker it's just the rims upset better.

Or just slightly rolled-thick planchet stock.

After some searching, its actually slightly above tolerance. 0.13 is the range for copper and 0.10 for zinc. Its probably a thick planchet like Will said. Im still wondering what made you weigh a 66?

Yes, thanks, I am just in the habit of weighing all of the coins I coin roll search, before I put them away, and now, it's not like I have a lot of things to do being stuck in doors with the things that are going on outside here in NYC. Thanks again.

Paragraph a(6) gives the weight of the 1 cent (non plated) as 3.11 grams and paragraph a states it can not vary more than 0.13 grams... Normal range is 2.98 grams to 3.24 grams... Yours is over weight by 0.03 grams... Most likely like Will said rolled thick... Hope that helps a bit!!!
