Well the title summed it up,lol. I'm not a collector I have just been hoarding pocket change for about 45 years and recently learned that errors are valuable. I have a pile of 1984's and some definitely have the doubled ear but I'm having a hard time identifying the doubled ear most of the time. Only on the most clean and clear specimens is it obvious and I could be wrong on some of those. With thousands of coins to go through I need to learn what to look for so I don't have to do over and over. I have a 2009 redbook with a picture of the doubled ear but I still am not sure what I am seeing in the photo that I need to find on my coins. If anyone can explain this to me I would greatly appreciate it. I'm using various loupes from 7x up to 10x along with a lighted magnifier called helping hands and it is less of a magnification issue and more of an "I am new to this and not sure what to look for" issue. All replies are welcome and appreciated.
Help! 1984's and what is the best/easiest way of identifying the doubled ear?

Welcome to the Forum, Jonathan! If you find the BIG doubled ear, you will know it but some of the others are a little more subtle. You need to know what a "normal" ear looks like before you can discern a doubled die from MD, damage or plating issues. One of the major factors, is it being larger than the normal ear should look. If it looks smaller, than more than likely, it has taken a hit or is MD. Time and lots of searching and studying will take care of the rest. Take a read through the Glossary here, about the items I have mentioned, that will help.
Here are links to check for doubled dies and other types of varieties.

The 1984 doubled ear is the easiest one to identify, just Google one and you'll see there's not much room for errorComment

Roger, I'm sure the OP is referring to the BIG doubled ear but more than likely was, just covering all my bases, in case this was not so. Between the three major sites, there are a few out there now. The last one listed on Wexler though, looks like a hit to me and it was submitted by Tanner, who is much sharper than me, so a little confused by that one....Comment
