2022 D Lincoln Shield Error? Just a new guy popping his 🍒

Hey fellow members, first timer here to this forum and any forum really. Newbie lincoln cent collector
I got started by coincidence actually, found and old army medical box in my mother's laundry room that had been just sitting there for about 8 years, an ex- bf of hers had left it there after moving out. Well around 2010 moved states to where my mother was living In, I hadn't been toner house in 10 years. While helping her do some spring cleaning I found the box, opened it up and found about 500 wheat and memorial cents from 1909- 1989. Almost every year was in that box in every condition possible, there was a significant amount of 1969,1970& 1971 all mints in excellent condition, about a dozen steels, and one Indian head crom1899.At that time I wasn't aware or even knew about coin errors. So I took the box and stored it away for 8 years. About 2 years ago I revisited the box after seeing an article talking about coin errors and their value... so I began going through the coins, looking for errors, no luck, but I began checking every coin that landed in my pocket and educating myself on coin errors and varieties, I ended up finding some error coins in that box after all, nothing to retire on but the best part was finding the first one. Priceless. Ok so Just a little or a lot about me... well like i said I check every coin that goes into my pocket and I happen to find this 2022 D cent... is this an error coin.. what is the correct terminology to.describe this. Thank you ahead of time for your responses or comments. I look forward to learning more and making new friends. Gracias.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the box of Lincolns you came across.

Interesting anomaly at the top of that cent. It's hard to tell if it's incuse (recessed) or raised. It almost looks like it might be glue or some type of resin on the surface.

I would give it a short soak in water to see if it's a water-based substance on the surface. If nothing happens I would follow up with a soak in acetone in case it might be petroleum-based. Both soaks would only need to be 5-10 mins to see if it is affected at all.

If it isn't altered by either soak, it might be a defect with the planchet before being struck by the dies.

I'm thinking glue (or something similar), if it was the result of a die defect I would think the reverse might show some weakness. I don't recall any of these being reported/posted [or sold online].

      Good luck with it.
