This is a zinc proof I pulled from circulation some time back. I see no listing anywhere regarding this anomaly. There is no evidence of MD or plating disturbance on the coin (I'm thinking this is not MD). Opinions?
1983-P RPM?

That does look like the curve of a S... The only 83 S RPM I found was CCs mm001P... You may want to change the thread title to 83 S LOL!!!Jim

Not sure if it is mint damage or post mint but it is just damage, the back of the mm has been sheared off and misplaced, not an RPM.Attached FilesComment

Since there is no other apparent damage would that have been done during the strike??? I like your thought as that does appear sheared!!!Jim

With the current pics we have to work with, the way I stated it, is the best answer I can give. Odds are, post strike and post mint, given the fact that it is an impaired proof, found in circulation. The reason I put the normal mm up against it, was to show the difference in shape and thickness.Comment

That would be anyone's guess. It looks like it did not take it all the way down to the field though, that's why it looks so clean. Looks like an angled hit that sheared off the back side of the mm and misplaced the metal where is has settled in. Nice find on a proof in circulation though, George, I have yet to find one in the wild.Comment
