    1964 Orange Peel??

Opinions please. What is wrong with this penny? It has a course copper texture. Thinking maybe painted but it's course even for paint.
    Thank you,

I think it is too extreme to be die wear on both die dies. I'm thinking PMD in the form of a corrosive agent or extreme heat - I'm not sure which though.

I thought of those also except if it were corrosive a lot of detail is quite visible and as for heat there is no discoloration showing signs of heat. This one has baffled me.

Vinegar can cause a similar detail if left long enough!!!

I looked this one up in the Official Price Guide to Mint Errors and it says that from 1972 cents struck at the Philidadelphia Mint were sometimes gold in color.

This was due to being struck on a blank or planchet punched from the thinned-down area where two coin metal strips were welded together, with one or both surfaces displaying a golden color due to an excess of zinc on the surface of the weld area. III-B-18 (unquote).

When I looked at your photos I noticed alot of bubbling which may have been caused by spray paint. I don't know for sure, this is still a mystery to me because I found 2 pennies both 1983 but one was from The Denver Mint. This was the closest description to your post. I hope this helps some.

Thank you, it helps quite a bit. I found a coin about 6 mo. ago that looked just like this one and I thought I put it in my "someday jar" and now I can't find it. If I locate it I will post it also. Does anyone know, if you have a coin that is questionable can you send it somewhere to be checked out? Error coins are my favorite and thru the years like most of you I'm sure, I have come across some odd balls.

Since that may be from a welded area it is possible that the pitting and bubbles are from the welding material itself. The welding material may have had some contaminates in it!!!

Excessive heat applied to the coin outside of the mint is the cause for the rippling. On coins other than the cent, this affect is commonly attributed as severe die deterioration.

it looks like someone took a wire wheel to it

and ground off the green oxidation

you can still she traces of the green
