    1927-D Misplaced Mint Mark?

Found this after I started getting involved with varieties in my own collection. It appears that the mint mark is not in it's proper/usual place. Have no idea if this is any kind of variety or error.

The mintmarks vary in placement and while a tad far, still seems within tolerances.

Technically, anywhere below the date is considered within tolerance for a hand punched mint mark.

Or even slightly in the date.

It might be fun to find all of the different mintmark placements for the same date.

Jean, you and JC could select an early date cent and have us all contribute images

showing the various placement of mintmarks.

Most mint marks are set low on this date, look for one that looks high and close to the date. you might find this nice RPM#1.

I will examine an early year of wheat cents and see how many different mint mark positions I can discern among one year minting.
It will take some time, so do not get impatient...

Hey Jean, what about something from the forties? Everyone should have a few examples on hand...

Okay you guys... I already took pictures of all the 1927 D coins I have in my own and my grandkids albums and my extras. So, that is what you are going to get first...
Some of the coins are very dark in color and were terribly difficult to photograph, but you can see the mint mark placement.

When the engraver punched the mint mark, it was done with a 3 sided tool that was placed in the general area and hit with a hammer. The location was never exactly the same on each die when they placed them that way. If he hit the mark punch and then decided to hit it deeper, you get the RPM. If he got the wrong punch, he might hit it with the correct one over the top and that gave a OMM.
At least that's how I understand it. So locations vary as do the OMM and RPM by each anvil (obverse die)

The articles I have read on the engraving and minting process are really interesting and helped me understand our hobby much more. I wish I had done it sooner.

That is an absolutely Awesome collection of the different dies ! WoW

Thanks Gary, but it was totally unintentional. One of these is in my personal album and four are in the grand kids albums that I am putting together. The rest are my extras.
You know, you always gotta have extras.
