    Off hand, I would say a contact mark for the reeding of a quarter.

          It has the characteristics of PMD and could very well be what Billy suggested contact marks from reeding...

            It looks as if some old miner was testing it to see if it were gold... LOL... Taste like copper to me... LOL... Nice find and really good pics!!!
