    What ARE These Common Marks..?

    Good morning.

After disregarding these marks on about 1,000 coins, I thought I'd finally break down and ask what they are. I'm sure you have all seen these. They usually come in a row of 3 (such as this example on a 1972d), but I sometimes see them in rows of 2 as well.

Any ideas or knowledge of them?

    Thank you.

Its a bag mark. Where another coin hit it. It think they call them bag marks from when they put coins in bags they just smack into each other

      Really?

Never woulda figured THAT in a million years. Those marks look nothing like any part of an LC... that I can pinpoint, anyway.

      Thanks for the assist, Jason.

I also see them regularly. I always assumed they had to be either from a counting or rolling machine.

Its the edge of most likely a quarter or dime. Some reeded edge coin made that mark

Just found another one of these, so I took out a dime to find that the reeded edge matches up perfectly.

Thanks again. (When you first said "bag of coins", Jason, I immediately and incorrectly assumed a bag full o' LC's.)

            Question answered.

            Cheers.

Actually, the proper term is "contact mark." Otherwise, you got it right: it came from the reeded edge of a dime or quarter (or half dollar or dollar, but unlikely) banging into the coin.
