Is there corrosion encompassing it? It might be a burst plating bubble, but I really can't tell.

There may be some crud in the area where it appears but I didnt want to clean it off to find out. I thought that might destroy it. I couldnt get a good shot to show it off. It seems like any angle I take the picture at gets some reflection.

It looks like a spot of corrosion or something. being the shape of an S is merely coincidental. It can't be a dropped letter, or anything to do with the hubbing, so it is definitely post strike damage.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I took this coin into a reputable dealer here in Phoenix that believes it is a letter that may have been stuck in the die due to lack of grease and happened to fall off midstrike. The picks I have just dont do justice to see the detail. THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!!! Let me know what you all think!

Uh, if you find a dealer that thinks that, sell it to him right away!

Would that be worth something? I didnt ask about value. I just wanted to catalog what kind of error it was. i didnt think non-recognized errors were really worth anything.

Your reputable dealer described a dropped letter error, which is quite valuable, but your coin is not a dropped letter error, since it is raised and not incuse. That's where capitalism comes into play...

Unfortunately, most dealers know squat about errors and very little to nothing about varieties.

...which is sad. (Good point, Jason.)

The first time I went into my local shop, the owner didn't know a chip from a CUD and knew nothing about CAMs or WAMs. (unreal.)

Now I only go in there for tubes and holders. LOL

Does anyone know a good source for me to have this evaluated (professionally) in the Phoenix area?

I would suggest emailing/PMing Mike Diamond of CONECA and ask his opinion. If he feels it is warranted, you can send it to him and he'll diagnosis it. IMO it is not likely an error but one of the previously mentioned PMD scenarios.
