I prefer my steak rare, and not scarce.

      Define
      rare
A relative term indicating that a coin within a series is very difficult to find. Also, a coin with only a few examples known. A rare Lincoln cent may have thousands known while a relatively common pattern may only have a few dozen known.

      condition rarity
A term to indicate a common coin that is rare when found in high grades. Also, the rarity level at a particular grade and higher.
Those are my principles. If you don't like them I have others

I do like Kobe though Will. That's rather scarce.

Pretty interesting conversation here, and one that as far as I am concerned is never over preached. I do have one note admrose and that is this statement

*my advice is to ONLY buy the above if they are slabbed by a reputable third party grader
That is sound advice to folks who may not be schooled in the hobby. For others who are, and know what to look for, buying a raw example can be a lot more inexpensive. Of course that is whatever your preference may be.

Thanks for bringing up the topic. It always makes for good reading.

If a buyer is typing into any form of search engine "rare" or "scarce" when searching for what they want to buy, then I'm not really sure what to tell them. It seems to me, that, in this particular case, by the seller describing the coin as rare or scarce, it is a warning sign to you to be cautious. If you ask me, that's a good thing...

I am currently upgrading all my Lincolns 1920-1929 to MS condition (anything in AU++ would be acceptable for me) . I figured that this would be an easy project and was planning, or rather hoping, I wouldnt spend over $50 on any single date or mint mark. Well I was able to complete this project with the exception of 4 dates..... I might be able to make it only 3 if I do some very intense internet "mining". Anyhow, to me, these 4 dates are not very "rare" at all, in fact you can get them on ebay for $1 or $2. But what IS rare, is finding one of these dates in MS condition for under $50.
So as mentioned in earlier posts, rarity is all relative.

PS. send me a message if you have any of these 4 dates in MS and want to sell em under $50..haha
I think everyone here knows what dates Im talking about, right?
