Opinions about plated 1984 Doubled Ear?

    Hi All,
On a recent trip to a local flea market I saw that the guy who usually deals in coins had a 1984 DDO (doubled ear) in great shape (most likely mint state) for sale, but it was silver plated. He told me it happened because he "dipped" it after "dipping" some silver coins, which I gather is a pretty common practice for coin dealers.

Here's my question- he's selling it for $80; would you buy it for that price? Or, what would you offer for it? Or would you just avoid it since it's tainted?

Dont know what a double ear sells for normally. Just like any thing else how bad do you want it. Just remember that its only plating. Offer him what you think its worth. Sorry im not much help

I do know one thing...I would never buy any silver coins from this guy. If he is silver plating them, that is worse than cleaning them. I would not pay more than $50 for that 1984 ddo. I would stay away from that dealer too.

I would do the same. There is no market for improperly cleaned or dipped coins. If you don't have one it would be worth $40 to have an example on hand.

Didn't you just find two MS examples of this coin?

              I'd stay away from it.

No matter what condition or how rare never buy a cleaned coin - especially a copper copper/zinc coin. Spend another $125 and get a good one.
                    thx

Nuts, I've just about worn my finger prints off searching through boxes of pennies for one these and here is a goof ball destroying a mint state example. I think I'd stay away too.
