Have you asked them plain out if they have the correct coin to send you?

Ultimately, what he sent wasn't yours. Write him through eBay's message system. Ask if he does have your coin. Explain that you're returning what he mistakenly sent you. Describe everything clearly so eBay reps can understand if they need to refer to it. Ship his coin back, be sure to use delivery confirmation to prove delivery.
As a seller, it's horrible when you ship the wrong item, and it happens at least once to nearly everyone. He's not going to ship out a second coin while you still have one worth 3x what you paid. Give him the benefit of the doubt. If he fails to come through with your coin, you've got total recourse with eBay, PayPal and Feedback. Mistakes happen, and when they do, it usually hurts the seller more than anyone. Try to be understanding, if he's communicative with you and fixes the problem to your satisfaction, you can only fairly leave decent feedback. If he's a real pain about it, a neutral isn't out of line. If he attempts to not reply and ignores your emails, I wouldn't be afraid to say so in far less than positive feedback.

As the buyer you're well covered. Check out his previous feedback- if he's sloppy with everything he does, it'll be reflected. I think you'll probably come out just fine.
IF your coin did get sent elsewhere and he can't deliver it to you- give him the opportunity to give you a great deal on something else you could use- he'd rather fix the problem with a coin, you might be able to work an even better deal if you can both communicate.

May turn out to be a serendipitous experience!

Wasn't suggesting you'd ever dream of keeping it my friend. Just trying to be helpful with my own experience in a similar situation. I apologize that you felt you needed to rebut, I hadn't intended on having that tone of advice.

Let us hope he can get the 1914 back. I would just let him know that you will be sending the 31s back with delivery confirmation and will be looking forward to receiving the 1914 as soon as he can turn it around and get it to you.
I find I have a much better chance of getting what I want when I place no blame on what happened and try to help the seller get the situation resolved.
If it happens the person received the 1914 does not want to return it to the seller so he can send it to you, then it can get complicated. In that case you should let the seller know that you only wanted the 1914 and would like to receive a full refund for the costs plus return postage for the 31s.
It will probably work out okay, but you do have a chance for resolving it through ebay and paypal (if you used it for payment) if the seller will not co-operate.
                  Good Luck,
                  Jean

have him send you the right coin first - then send it back

If you demand your coin be sent first, keep us updated, I'd like to know how that works out.

Such a hassle. The last time this happened to me (mid you the coins were not this expensive), the seller had me keep the wrong coin and managed to get back and then send the correct coin to me. A hassle, but it worked out. In this case there is a lot of extra shipping - just a headache - sorry to hear you have to go through this...
