BadThad is so correct Abe, Mcaffee stinks and one of the hardest AV programs to remove. The Avast is a very good AV software and free.. Used it for years with no problems. Toolbars are a easy entry for many to watch your activities on the web. (and you ok it when you agree to install them, they are also a problem to remove many times)

Follow Badthad's recommendations and you will solve your problems.

NEVER run out and install a third party browser to "fix" a problem. The problem is still there and it isn't because Internet Explorer is a bad browser. IE has a bad rep because that's what most people use and they gunk it up with all kinds of crap. The problem is not with IE, it's with users trashing it with toolbars, excessive temp files, malware, virsuses and a million more things. I see it everyday. IE is an excellent browser.

The first thing I want you to do is clean-up your system a little. Download and install ccleaner:

Download CCleaner latest version for Windows free. CCleaner latest update: January 10, 2025

Be sure to uncheck the option to install google chrome during the setup. Run the program and let it clean everything. This will purge all your cookies and autocomplete history....so make sure you know all your login ID's and passwords in case you have to re-enter them the sites you visit. You'll notice a speed difference right away on your PC.

        Next, download hijackthis:

Download Trend Micro HijackThis latest version for Windows free. Trend Micro HijackThis latest update: December 17, 2024

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR PC WITH THIS PROGRAM. It's pretty powerful and made for experts. Just run it and create a log file, then post the file here for me to look at. I will tell you how to proceed.

Finally, I can't stand McAfee, it's a resource hog and it's easily killed by viruses. I've seen it completely owned MANY times. So bad, it took significant effort on my part to even remove it from a system. Are you using the "Internet Security" version with a firewall? Also, most users do not keep their subscriptions to date. I've seen many computers with 2-3 years since the last update and the user believed they were still being protected......you are NOT if your definitions are that old. I would uninstall McAfee and install the free version of Avast:

Download Avast Free Antivirus latest version for Windows free. Avast Free Antivirus latest update: July 22, 2025

Avast is an excellent AV program and it's FREE for one year at which point you can reinstall it to get another year.

Lastly, I want you to run a FULL scan with SuperAntiSpyware:

Download SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition latest version for Windows free. SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition latest update: January 8, 2025

Delete EVERYTHING it finds....and it will find stuff.

        This will be a start.
I was about to try this and my better half says were in a contract with mcafee and it doesn't run out til July.
I know I have files gallore, but I don't know how to delete them. I AM NOT PUTER SAVY. I guess at everything I do.
What is a RAM and how do I check it?
        I'm lost

I tried the CC cleaner, steps 1 & 2 are simple, I don't understand step 3. Start a scan, anybody know?

At step 2 where it says click on "Run", I clicked on it then another box comes up that says "Open", I clicked on it and it talks about a service agreement. Have I gone to far or do I click on yes I agree? I don't want to have to pay for something that I don't want.
Or am I going to far on step 2 by clicking the "Open" button...

You do know that everytime I see your avatar I start laughing... It makes it hard to type... ... Do not agree with anything... Did you have an option to skip or cancel??? If so click that... If not it sounds like the free use is over and we will need to go a different route... I will do a little research and get back with you if you like... Maybe get on the phone and go through some steps to help clear up the problem!!!

I'm confused? All the programs I listed are completely FREE. What do you mean at "step 2"? Which program are you running when you're referring to the above?

Cool...another Avast lover! The best thing about Avast is that it won't drag your computer down, it's very mean and lean, yet effective. It also has a boot time scan option which is VERY powerful.

Try disabling your browser add-ons from Internet Explorer....just went through the same problem and that fixed it for me.

I said GOODBYE to Winblows many years ago.

                            I run MEPIS LINUX.

Besides being FREE....it runs trouble free for YEARS without ever needing so much as a reboot.

Augh! Linux. The great Penguin. I've tried it but because I am so used the sea of blue and the lingo of the Micro Blue, I gave up. It became too confusing.
