So I went into a Suntrust for rolls...

And I asked for 2$ worth of cents and a roll of dimes. I was then asked if I had an acct w/them. I've used this branch before in a Wal mart here in central FL, so I think the lady recognized me, but I told her "no" anyway. And so she tells me that as of this past Monday, Suntrust no longer gives out change to anyone who doesn't have an acct w/them. I guess they got shafted by dishonest people who tried to cash in rolls with crap coins or some other reason like they need all the money they can get, and this will help them recoup everything their hearts desire in a greedy type fashion. (Meaning if you have an acct w/them, they'll hit you w/a low monthly service fee and give you all the coins you want because they have your money.) I think it's intensely sad how this has degraded to a "how can we get every red cent out of someone and bleed them dry" mentality to run a business. There used to be businesses that had the opposite state of mind who slowly changed their minds, I guess. Sorry to rant. I'll just take my business elsewhere for coin hunting.
    Thanks and God bless, guys.

Chris I understand. I'm from Canada and the first 2 times my husband I went over the border, we went to 2 different banks to sell our rolls of coin to them and they refused them because we weren't account holders with them, so we ended up using coin star at a Tops. I dreaded it because I'm too cheap to pay the user handling fee.

So the next year (this past November) I got smart...I went the casino! Ha ha ha! We took Valet parking and walked in with 3 milk crates full of rolled coin! Boy was I embarrassed but I didn't care. I wanted my roll US coin changed over and I was about to open an account with a US bank for this sole reason!

It worked like a charm. The tellers and us had a blast. We chatted and talked about the differences in our casinos and currency, etc.

Anyhow, on that note, I discovered that there are A LOT of people of who cash in rolls of coin to gamble with...

Just a hint for everyone here, think about it.... desperate gamblers...rolled coin...precious collections.... *hey I know first hand what gamblers will do to feed their need...

I do not think the bank can legally do that... If you are exchanging legit cash for cash then they are suppose to do that!!!

Jim not so I'm afraid, just the IRA, they are a business, agency, etc.

I'm not too sure about the US state laws, but I know here in Canada we have a Canadian Currency Act, and I know I have called on it a couple times in my store....legally, we do not have to accept more than 25 pennies as a form of payment. That is just one aspect of our act.

          I would check it out.

Its amazing what I learn from my customers.

I have one who refuses to do their taxes because they refuse to report to an outside/third party government agency. Not too sure what US is like, but I suspect it is the same, the IRA, or Canada CRA are 'revenue' 'agencies' that are government endorsed and are a complete and separate entity of the government within itself.

I personally haven't looked into this too much and I tend to believe about 60%-70% of what he states to be true. And logically it makes sense, they are titled "agency" If they were part of the 'government' then they would the Income Revenue Government and not "agency" (or what ever the US calls their taxation agency)

The same logic would naturally apply for banks, trusts, credit unions, etc.

Just a thought to serious ponder on

A bank is a business like any other business. They are there to make money and not serve the needs of people who are not customers. I'm not sure why in the US there's an entitlement mentality that causes people to think a bank is a public service institution, it certainly is not. They have every right to turn away non-customers or charge customers that request coinage. The pay a premium to face value to buy coins and dealing with in coming coins costs them money. If you're mad about them not giving or accepting coins, simply create an account with them so you get that privledge.

In 1964 when I searched rolls, many banks had this policy so nothing has changed in my opinion.

And then there is my credit union..I get two $50 bags of cents per week ...they call when they have extra..and the teller told me today that sometimes customers bring in coins from estates...did I want her to call next time so I could go through those too ?
Last week a teller came over and gave me some old nickels....all silver. I agree it is not their job...but guess who'll get my rollover IRA ?

I suppose I was just frustrated from the inconvenience standpoint because I have dealt with those people at that branch of bank before. Thad, I have two bank accounts already, I dont need another one. And I wasn't really mad, just thought it was kinda sad that things have in my opinion degraded when it wasn't that way since I've been here in Florida. Sorry if I came across that way.

With exception of going directly to the mint banks are the only place to get coins or paper currency... If you went to a bank with foreign currency to exchange it they would do it in a heart beat, depending on how much you have, and of course charge a fee... It would not matter if you had an account or not!!!

I understand and I'm sorry if my post seemed to be chastising you. That was not my intent, I was trying to educate all collectors. I've posted my feelings before....so many collectors act like banks should help them with their coin searching, like the banks are obligated to serve them. I tend to jump into every post I see on the internet regarding bad experiences with banks that collectors are not customers of. Seems like I see a few posts every month. I often come across harsh but what I'm saying is reality....my goal is to educate.

I have sent an email to the fed reserve asking if banks can deny changing a dollar for one dollar of pennies or any other change... After all it is the banks that represent the fed reserve... They get the money to dish out to us!!!
