    Is this what I think it is? 1929 S RPM2?

    Or is is plain MD or die deterioation. You make the call.

    David,
    This is not RPM-002. The mintmark position is too far south to be the RPM. You may be correct in that it is some sort of die deterioration. It is very close though.

        I was looking at some 1929S wheats that I have and on one of them the S is very close to the date like the one pictured. Is that a common occurrence?

          The US mint punched the Die. The used the Die until it was retired. There is no way to know how many Cents like mine and yours out there. Perhap's Thousands.

            Remember that these mintmarks were hand punched. The mint says that anywhere under the date would be considered a good punch. That is why you see mintmarks very close to the date on some years, and substantially more left or right. This would still be considered a normal punch.
