Recently my oldest sister passed away at the ripe old age of 83 ten years my senoir. Her husband had passed a few years before and had some coins. When we went to the funeral for my sister her oldest boy said uncle amos i know you collect coins can you take a look and see if there is anything of value, i did and in a 2x2 there was a 1909 vdb marked mpl on the front. I used his old loupe and computer to find out all i could the rim is square and very bold strike, amost blueish in color. On one site i found there was 3 pup to look for, none of those polish scratches are there and the cresent die chip on the back is not there. My question is i know nothing of the mpl set, if those markers are missing but the rim is square and a bold strike could this still be a mpl? And if so does anyone on this site atribute them? I have no pics of it, my nefew has the coin. Thanks ahead of time

There are many proof like business strikes, so they are fairly difficult to attribute. The die markers are pretty well-known. Without pictures, I doubt any one can help you. However, the bluish color is encouraging.....the MPL's are known for taking on some nice color/toning.VERDI-CARE™ ALL METAL CONSERVATION FLUID -
One pair of dies was used to make all 1194 1909 VDB MPL. If that crescent is not there, its not an MPL.

I would send it to ANACS if you want to be sure. Post pics and we can tell you what we think.Comment
