    Check Everything!

There has lately been some outstanding discussions on searching coins and making sure to check just about everything no matter what date it is. We are having some wonderful discoveries that have brought up thought-provoking questions on why did it take so long to find, such as Chris recent discovery 1988 1c major doubled earlobe. There has been an "Inverted Statue" and lots of very nice "extra column" DDRs that are crossing all the various attributers desk at a fever-pitch rate. It's an exciting time for everybody.

I just came across a Lincoln cent that again caused me to say -- it can't be, not another "wild & crazy" doubled die! I just sent photos of it to John Wexler and he requested to see the coin ASAP. This is another one of those that, though I believe it is what it is, I also feel it needs a second professional opinion. So, I will await John's examination to hear what he says about the coin. If he concurs in my analysis of the coin, I'll get it posted on the DVN "News" web page and let you know.

What I'm simply saying is continue to check everything, leave no coin unturned. And most of all ... have fun!

Great point Billy. It's too easy to fall into the rut of just glancing for what's already known. I've done it my myself, but now I look to see what I see and not just for what others have seen.

The book that my wife gave me said " break the coin down into 4 panels on the front and four on the back. That way you will cover the entire coin. Thanks Billy for re-emphasizing that point. I used to just look for only the known but I now look also for the unknown. What I don't know I may find out if I ask the right questions.

You're probably right Aisha. My mind has been warped-out these last few days in all the whirlwind going on.

So what is it? I'll post some photos here in a few. It's crazy looking. It's on a 1990 cent on the reverse. From what I'm seeing it looks like doubling of the upper arches that are 180 degrees inverted and they extend horizontally across Memorial bays #5 thru #7. I did an overlay and all the remnants perfectly match. I showed photos of it to Wexler and he requested to see the coin ASAP.

Remember the 2000 1c "Inverted Statue" DDR that is documented and assigned in my files and Wexler's files? Think along the same lines. BTW, I did send the 2000 1c "Inverted Statue" to ANACS and it is now in transit back to me and it has both my "C" number and Wexler's "W" number on the label and it graded AU-58. I believe it also has "discovery piece" on the label as well but invoice doesn't show that part. Will have to wait to see.

                      So, can it happen again?

Here's the photos on the 1990 cent. It's weird looking.

It looks like doubled remnants of the upper arches that are 180 degrees inverted extending horizontally thru bays #5 thru #7.

I did a transparent overlay, inverted it 180 degrees and superimposed over those remnants. They match perfectly with the arches.

The bottom two photos are the same as the top two but the photos are turned upside-down which gives you another view perspective.

We do have the documented 2000 1c "Inverted Statue" DDR so we know it can happen. So, did it happen again but this time it is the arches that are inverted instead of the statue.

The coin is in transit to Wexler.
