Searching for errors and varieties ...

Hello my friends, could you tell me what are your ways for going thru a roll of cents ? Do you look for certain errors, variety, or just examine every possible
angle ? or you just go for specific years only and then search for some oddities ...
    regards,
    Andy.

You will find that the longer you do the searching thing, the better you will be at picking out stuff relatively quickly. You will also learn which dates tend to have the most varieties. Once you get it down, you will develop your own searching technique that will allow you to go through rolls in no time. Until you get to that point, I definitely side with what others here have said....look at everything. One thing though....look for the obvious. If you have to look too hard to see something, it is probably not worth a premium anyway. Get yourself some books, or look at photos of known varieties so you have an idea what to look for. If you have questions...we have answers (sounds like a commercial doesn't it?)

I look for things that don't belong where they are.
Works good for finding my reading glasses, too.

And above all, different light angles on the subject coin may reveal hidden anomalies. Just do not look with one angle of light.

I have found that if you start your search from the center of the coin and work outwards you are apt not to overlook any areas. Good Luck!!!!! Joe

I have searched rolls for a long time, and then a post here about rotated dies made me start looking for them. I found two quickly, and then realized....I was not looking for them before, and so now I have to look through all those searched pennies...AGAIN. This hobby will make you seem small and uninformed every time someone posts a new variety or error.

                            Legend,
you can't be a legend unless you have suffered like the rest of us somewhat newbies.

The first rotated die I found for certain was accidental. I had put a Misaligned Die error coin in a slab insert (sort of rubbery coin holder you use in self-slabbed coins) and when I turned the coin over to check that it was secure... *that* was the moment of my very first rotated die coin discovery. Now I have perhaps thousands of Lincolns in bags that I thought were thoroughly searched... Yikes!

Great advice already- I would only add, it can be overwhelming in the beginning, with everything to look for. It gets easier after time.
