Well, I thought the same as Joe...but Denver may produce as many as Philly since around 1950...and Denver did produce more shield cents.....but I was thinking QC may have something to do with it too.
I have been presuming all the same - before 1996 Philly produced all the dies but more were used in Philly (as opposed to Denver or San Fran). Having more dies should mean more chances for errors during the hubbing process. And I have heard that '96 to present the QC in Denver may be greater than Philly thus producing less mistakes recently.
I always thought, and still think, that the reason why we have more Philly DDs than Denver DDs was because most die variety collectors live closer to Philly than to Denver, for which reason they receive more Philly than Denver, and therefore more DDs from Phily than Denver. In fact, I normally receive my first (insert current year here)-dated Philly doubled die before I even find one example of a REGULAR coin from Denver.
Wendell Carper It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!
I think Philly has the task of producing the varieties/errors... Of course this would be top secret because the mint is not in the business of producing variety/error coins... LOL... This means that any Denver or other mint variety/errors are truely variety/errors... LOL!!!
Jim (A.K.A. Elmer Fudd) Be verwy verwy quiet... I'm hunting coins!!! Good Hunting!!!
