What is the future for Lincoln moderns.

I was wondering in 20 40 60 or 80 yrs how will our modern variations hold up. ( i dont think i posted this Q to the board yet ).

    WAMs,
    lincoln extra finger,
    Trail dies
    DDR/DDO
    RPMs

How do you think they will hold up. What better coins do you think will do the best and what variations we go after now would end up as a dud in value ( its gonna peak then drop out ).

    Open for discussion.

Fantastic subject! I really think lincoln cents will always be popular. As far as varieties we are a very small hobby within a hobby. So likeminded people like us will be there in the future. The classics will always do well and be highly sought after. I would say any early lincoln in ms red will due very well in the future, as they due well now.

Considering that all of the things you listed are no longer possible (with the exception of trail dies), I think everything will hold up well. As time goes on, there will be more people wanting to collect these. I don't see it going away at all.

Bob, this may be a silly question (with an obvious response that I'm simply not aware of), but why are DDRs, DDOs and RPMs no longer possible?

RPMs are no longer possible because the MMs are are not put on the masters by hand with a punch... They are done at the time the masters are made and engraved by the machines... DDOs and DDRs because of the single squeeze hubbing... When the hubbing was performed twice the DDOs/DDRs would be created... Hope that helps... Unless some way is found to preserve the zincolns there will be none left within 50 years... The copper may remain but that's it... LOL!!!

It depends on the number of new collectors to the hobby who want to collect what is listed above and quantities available.

IMO Trends cannot be predicted that far out.

It's all about supply and demand. As long as new collectors keep joining the fray, demand will be strong. You also have to consider that most of the moderns have been relatively unpopular compared to wheats. The mentality of "there's billiions of them" has hurt the general interest from a value standpoint. You have to remember, most people collect because they see dollar signs and a chance that coins will be worth more into the future.....most don't collect for the passion. This works to an advantage for moderns because quality pieces have been largely ignored and eventually, IMO, they willl come due.

Based on the value of certain coins and the current trend for the Lincoln cent the cent in certain grades will be highly collectible.

Here is a link that support this trend of thought:

Zero in on the rare coins likely to rise sharply in value, based on historical price trends. Our recommendations help you identify coins destined for greatness.
