Well, they still struck 85 1/2 million of them. There are plenty of other dates with even smaller mintages. I guess it just might be where you are from or where you get your coins from. I have found plenty 42s coins in circulation over the years.
Either way, if you have not found many of these during your searches, then it well qualifies as a nice find. Congrats!

Sean, I have found two 1931S cents in circulation over the years. They had a mintage of about 866 thousand. I think they are by far the lowest mintage coin I have found to date.

i can not disagree. in my 40+ years collecting, the 42-s has been a little tough to come across. i have found some not quite commons. my first lincoln album, the last addition was the 42-s. also kinda hard, at least here in the southeast, the 1954-p.

The hardest to find for me 1941 to 1959 were 42's, 43'd&s, 49's, 54'P and 55's.

Wow. That's quite the disparity in difficult dates to find in some areas. I bought a few bags of circ coin in Missouri in 2005, and one of the bags has 14 rolls of F-XF 1954Ps.
This thread started yesterday, and I have already found 3 1942Ss today.
Wheaties do make the rounds, as do most older coins. I find this very interesting.
