    PCGS vs. NGC

Which one is generally more valued as "prestigious"? I know ANACS is 3rd, and ICG is a distant 4th, but I was wondering (between NGC and PCGS) which one is more "popular", as I might be sending in a few coins for grading soon.

Also, just out curiosity, is NGC the only grading service that has the "*" (star) available on their grades for a "super-nice" coin?

While it can be argued as to which one is actually the stricter grader, there is really no doubt that for resale value, PCGS is still king. If you open up an account(free) at Heritage Auctions, you can view their completed auctions and you'll see that given the same grade, PCGS will fetch a higher premium than any of the other services.

I think I like stars better (so I'll go with NGC ;) )

For some reason Im thinking it has to do with their holders. They just look better.

P.C.G.S. for resale value hands down, They are both very cherry-pickable! I like N.G.C.'s white insert as a contrast to copper, and steel wheats! And they're more affordable! That's my thoughts!

PCGS grades better, PCGS is more respected sight unseen, PCGS sells for more on the open market.

For resale...PCGS is it...unless you are talking varieties, then your options are limited much more than they are with ANACS.

Just for information sake, if you look at the reports, ICG is ahead of ANACS in all categories. So, ICG is third in popularity and ANACS is fourth.

I use to support ngc - but after selling my collection and relized I was getting up to 25% les on resale than pcgs I like pcgs. I will say that ngc had great customer service.

No one company is "best", each has it's strengths.

ANACS is great for die varieties, but IMO, far too conservative when it comes to mint state grading. (can't speak to ICG, I've never used them, at least not since they switched staff with ANACS.)

I like NGC for their holders- they display an error coin far better with their prong style slabs. In my experience, a bit more liberal in their MS grades.

PCGS dumps millions upon millions of dollars into marketing their name, and it would seem as long as they continue to do so, they'll reign as market leader. Apples to apples, PCGS holders bring the strongest prices when a coin sells. No arguing that their grading is quite consistent, but frustrating that Cherrypicker's die varieties are about all that they'll attribute.
